Santa Barbara High’s boys tennis team earned a CIF Division-1 semifinal berth on Monday with a 13-5 victory over Palos Verdes at the Tennis Club of Santa Barbara.
It was the second year in a row the two schools had met in the CIF quarterfinals, with Palos Verdes advancing last season.
This time it’s the Dons (17-3) who live to see another day. Santa Barbara won in convincing fashion, taking a 9-3 lead after two rounds.
“It was great to see all of our starters contribute to this victory,” reported Dons head coach Greg Tebbe “Palos Verdes is a strong and well coached team and I am extremely proud of our team for the way they played.”
Graham Maassen swept three sets in singles and the doubles team of Mitchell Kuhn and Jack Damen also swept three sets to lead the Dons.
It is Santa Barbara’s first appearance in the CIF semifinals since 2010, when it lost to University in the championship match.
The Dons will play University again in Wednesday’s semifinals.
