A long, successful tennis season came to an end for the Santa Barbara High boys on Friday. The Dons dropped a 4-3 decision to San Marino in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Regional Championships.
“We came up just short but our players can hold their heads up high and be proud of what they have accomplished today and in the entire season,” Dons coach Greg Tebbe said.
Santa Barbara (18-5) won the Channel League, finished runner-up at the California State Championships in Fresno early in the season, made the consolation finals at the All-American tournament in Newport and reached the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.
Ryan Chung won the lone match in singles for Santa Barbara, beating Vincent Cheng of San Marino, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
Mitchell Kuhn-Jack Damen and Avery Chernin-Jackson Powell earned wins in doubles.
San Marino won the CIF-SS Division 2 championship and was seeded third in the 16-team regional. Santa Barbara was seeded 11th.
“Being one of the final 8 teams in this tournament is something our players can be extremely proud of,” Tebbe said. “We battled all season long and today was not different. Our guys played hard, focused tennis to the very last point.”
The season continues for Graham Maassen and the duo of Kuhn-Damen next week as they play in the Round of 32 of CIF Individual Tournament
