Cate School’s unseeded boys tennis team has reached the CIF Division 4 semifinals after Monday’s 11-7 victory over second-seeded Wilson of Hacienda Heights.
The temperature as the match started was in triple digits.
Cate, which finished second in the Condor League and entered the postseason with an 8-8 record, prevailed by winning all three singles sets in the final round to clinch the victory. The score was 7-5 after two rounds.
For the day, six points came from singles player Jason Xiao and the doubles tandem of Abhay Singh and Michael Revord. Alex Erling and Jack Hoover both won 2-of-3 sets in singles to give Cate seven of the nine points available.
Brendan Lokre and Michael Nettesheim won a big doubles point at the end of the first round to give Cate an important 4-2 advantage.
Cate advances to the Division 4 semifinals for the first time since 2009. The Rams will face Santiago High School in Corona on Wednesday.
