The Santa Barbara Pony Red All-Star baseball team went 5-0 en route to its first tournament championship.
Santa Barbara Red defeated the Santa Barbara Pony 11u team, 11-0, in the Championship game of last weekend?s Memorial Day Classic.
Santa Barbara Red jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning and never looked back. Tommy Holguin was dominating on the mound pitching 4 innings of no-hit ball to earn the win. Jack Deardorff and Scott Feldman each had a pair of hits.
The Santa Barbara Red opened the tournament with an 18-4 win over Santa Barbara Pony Blue team. Zach Jensen led the offensive attack with 3 hits and 3 RBIs. Jackson Hamilton had 2 hits along with 2 RBIs. Anthony Ramirez reached on an error and scored a run. Travis Pierce and Derek True each added singles, while Dominic Roderick earned the win, pitching 3 innings, allowing 2 earned runs and striking out two.
Next up for Santa Barbara were the Santa Ynez All-Stars. Santa Barbara led 4-1 through 4 innings until they broke out with a 6-run 5th innings to take a commanding 10-1 led. Deardorff, Holguin and Jose Navarro each had 2 hits while Toby Spach and David Gladish each had singles. Chase Mayer pitched 4 strong innings, allowing just 2 hits and 1 earned run to earn the victory.
In their third game the Red All-Stars were matched up against a very tough Santa Barbara Sharks team. SB Red jumped out to an early 3-2 lead after one inning of play. The score remained 3-2 until the Sharks scored a pair of runs in the top of the 4th to take a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the 6th Holguin led off with a single to left, Jensen followed with a single to left, scoring Holguin and tying the game. After Steals of second and third base, Jensen scored the go-ahead run on a single to right field by Scott Feldman to take a 5-4 lead.
Santa Barbara Red held on for the win and earned the top seed heading into single-elimination play.
In the semi-finals Santa Barbara drew a rematch with Santa Ynez. Jensen started on the mound and pitched 4 innings, scattering 4 hits and striking out 2. Jackson Hamilton came on in relief and threw 2 innings, allowing 1 hit and striking out 2. The game was close through 3 innings with Santa Barbara leading 4-2. Santa Ynez tied the score 4-4 in the top of the 4th.
Santa Barbara broke the game open with 7 runs in the bottom of the 4th to take an 11-4 lead and that is the way it would end. Chase Mayer had 3 hits and 2 RBIs. True and Jensen each added two hits apiece, while Spach and Navarro each added a single apiece.
Next up for the Santa Barbara all-stars is a tournament June 8-9 in Santa Ynez.
