Cate School’s Joel Serugo has been selected as a Santa Barbara Running High School Runner of the Month.
Serugo, a Cate freshman, has excelled in his first year of high school track, winning multiple individual frosh/soph titles at the County Championships, the Russell Cup, and at the Condor League Championships.
The freshman has qualified for CIF in four events, including the premier 100 and 200-meter running events, and will be competing at the upcoming CIF Division 4 Prelims.
“He’s shown great progress and promise for a bright future in Track & Field,” says coach Kyle Mason, who complimented Joel’s work ethic and postive attitude.
Mason says he’s learned to look at Joel as a leader even though he’s jsut a freshman.
“I expect greatness our of him and he knows that. He’s coming around really well,” Mason said.
Serugo, a Los Angeles native, must balance athletics with his schoolwork at the rigorous college prep school in Carpinteria.
“Being a student at Cate calls for a lot more maturity than most schools,” Mason said.
