The Big West Conference released its All-Conference teams on Tuesday night, with champion Cal State Fullerton claiming a bulk of the top awards.
UCSB’s Robby Nesovic was one of two non-Titans to receive individual accolades. Nesovic was named Freshman Field Player of the Year, and UC Irvine’s Taylor Sparks shared the overall Field Player of the Year honor with Fullerton’s Carlos Lopez.
As a freshman, Nesovic led UCSB’s lineup with a .343 batting average and ranked in the top-10 among Big West hitters in both batting average (eighth) and on-base percentage (.414, 10th). In conference play, Nesovic enhanced his power numbers as the year went on, ranking third in home runs (three) and eighth in slugging percentage (.495) among Big West hitters.
Six other Gauchos were selected to All-Big West teams. Brandon Trinkwon, Dylan Hecht, Joe Woodward and Austin Pettibone are Second Team honorees, while catcher Jackson Morrow and Cameron Newell were Honorable Mentions.
Hecht led the Big West with seven saves and was second in appearances with 15. Woodward’s .389 average in Big West play was second in the conference.
Santa Barbara High product Denver Chavez made the First Team for the first time in his career at Cal Poly.
The Gauchos will take on Texas A&M on Friday at noon in the first game of the Corvallis Regional of the NCAA Tournament, which will be broadcasted live on ESPN3.com and can be heard locally on AM 1290.
