Local clinical sports psychologist Dr. Steve Smith is giving a talk detailing different training strategies for endurance athletes on Thursday, May 16th at Killer B Fitness.
The event, A Tale of Two Brains: Achieving Peak Performance in Endurance Sports, will begin at 6:45 p.m.
“My talk will discuss some basic neuropsychology,” said Smith. “Our feelings are often at war with our thoughts. In a very real sense, as endurance athletes, we are often ‘of two minds,’ when the going gets difficult. I will discuss how we can bring these two minds into sync so that our bodies can do the very best job possible” said Smith.
A major part of endurance sports is the psychological aspect.
“For all sports, mental preparation is often the forgotten component of training despite the fact that it is one of the most important aspects of good performance. Given the time and solitude of endurance sports, good mental training might be even more key than in team events. When a sport involves a high degree of physical suffering, we need to have strategies for dealing with the mental monsters that emerge,” Smith said.
Following the talk there will be an informal Q&A session.
The event is free with a suggested donation.
