SBCC’s Charlie Holyoke fired rounds of 70 and 73 on Monday to take third place in the Southern Cal Regional men’s golf tournament at Costa Mesa Country Club.
Holyoke, a freshman from Seattle, Wash., finished at 1-under 143, three shots behind the medalist, Jordan Asper of Palomar who shot 68-72. Dodge Ward turned in a 149 (72-77) for the Vaqueros and qualified for the State Championships as an individual, along with Holyoke and Steven Lam.
Lam, the medalist in the WSC Finals at 7-under 137, shot 79-71–150 and earned the last qualifying spot on a scorecard playoff.
Orange Coast won the eight-team tourney with a 1-over-par 721 for 36 holes. Canyons, the WSC champion, was second at 733. SBCC shot identical rounds of 373 and finished third at 746.
The top two teams advanced to the State Championships on Monday, May 13 at Rancho Canada GC in Carmel.
“The weather was a bit of a factor with hard downpours at the start of the first round and near the end of the second,” said SBCC coach Chuck Melendez.
“We didn’t play our best and we’re extremely disappointed that we didn’t qualify as a team. We had high expectations.
“I’m proud of this team. We just didn’t get it done today.”
The Vaqueros, runners-up in the WSC, finish with an impressive 75-17 record.
