Santa Barbara High’s James Morton advanced in a playoff at Monday’s CIF-ss Individual Championship, taking one of the final spots for the SCGA Championships in Pasadena on May 30.
Morton was one of 28 golfers to advance on Monday at La Purisima in Lompoc, a group led by Rico Hoey of Rancho Cucamonga.
Hoey won the Southern Section title by carding a round of three-under 69, besting La Quinta’s KiTaek Lee by one stroke. Three golfers were two strokes back.
Morton finished with a 78 and was one of 12 players forced into a playoff for the three final SCGA spots. Morton parred the first playoff hole and sank a 25-foot birdie putt on the next hole to advance.

Santa Barbara’s Ryan Stoll was eliminated in the playoff after making a late charge to complete his round at 78. Stoll played the last 12 holes before the playoff at one-under par.
