We’ve seen it before: a high-ranked team loses to a lower-ranked team when it really counts?in the playoffs. Dunn School?s baseball team didn?t let that happen as they defeated their first-round opponent, Valley Christian Academy, 7-0.
Junior pitcher Ryan Layton limited the Lions to just 2 hits over 6 innings. He also picked off 4 base runners with his patented quick throw to first, while sophomore Chandler Hughes made Web Gems in the outfield.
Although the Earwig offense started slowly, scoring only 2 runs in the first 4 innings, they brought 5 men home in the 5th. Sophomore phenom Shannon Carroll hit two doubles, while sophomore Alex Knightley and junior Dominic Lawrence each drove in two runs. This game defined total team effort, and because of that, Dunn will play another day.
Finishing their season ranked 12-4 overall, 5-1 in the Condor League, 43-13 over the last 3 seasons, Dunn travels Tuesday to Catalina Island for the 2nd round of CIF Southern Section Division 7 playoffs.
