BVB: San Marcos is a model of efficiency in 2nd-round sweep

San Marcos was firing on all cylinders and rolled to a 25-18, 25-17, 25-16 sweep over El Segundo in a second-round match of the CIF Division 2 boys volleyball playoffs on Thursday at the Thunderhut.

Baker Johnson pounded 16 kills, Shane Hauschild put away 14 and Taylor Mann dominated in the middle with eight solo blocks. Setter Christian Widmer handed out 37 assists, as the Royals’ fast-paced offense overwhelmed El Segundo.

“This was the most efficient the San Marcos team has played,” Royals coach Roger Kuntz said. “We were in system the whole night. Our middles were very effective blocking for us, the outside was automatic, the setting decisions were good and the defense was much improved.”

San Marcos, the division’s fourth seed, will travel to Oaks Christian for Saturday’s quarterfinals. Oaks Christian defeated Long Beach Poly 3-1.

“We’re very excited to get to the top eight,” said Kuntz.
