Esperanza’s top-ranked boys volleyball team reserved its spot in Saturday’s CIF Division-2 Championship match by bringing down San Marcos on Wednesday night 25-21, 25-15, 25-15.
“We thought we competed well in game one but their machine got rolling better than ours did,” said Royals head coach Roger Kuntz.
The Royals, who graduate only one senior, finish their season with a 23-9 record.
“I’m very happy with our season, very proud of our guys of course,” Kuntz said.
Esperanza advances to meet third-seeded Santa Barbara in the championship match.
“Esperanza is the No. 1 seed in Division 2 for a reason. They are a very strong team,” Kuntz said.
Shane Hauschild led the Royals with 10 kills. Baker Johnson added seven more. Kuntz also thanked senior captain Chris Newton for his leadership throughout the season.
