Cliff Lekas captured the 400 in a school-record time on Friday, leading the SBCC men to third place in the WSC Track & Field Finals at Moorpark College.
Lekas, a sophomore from Dos Pueblos High, clocked 48.01 to eclipse the previous SBCC best of 48.22, set by Tim White in 1987.
Ian Roberts won the 1500 in 3:54.58, the second-fastest time in school history. He qualified for Saturday’s Southern Cal Prelims in the 1500 and 10,000 meters.
The Vaqueros finished third with 110 points in the 11-team men’s competition. Glendale edged West L.A. for the title, 170-161.
The men’s 4 x 400 team took second place and also set a school record, breaking a 39-year-old mark with a time of 3:16.57. Tristan Lake led off and was followed by James Herb, Geoff Brown and Lekas.
The Vaqueros qualified 14 men for the So Cal Prelims at Antelope Valley, including the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relays. Cody Bidlow qualified in the 100, 200 and 4 x 100 relay and Lekas will compete in four events — the 200, 400 and both relays.
In the 12-school women’s meet, the Vaqueros were sixth with 74 points. West L.A. won with 176 points.
Freshman Emily Bernath won the 800 in 2:13.02 and lowered her No. 1 time in the state this year by more than a second. That’s just 0.32 seconds off the school record.
Kodie Hebert won the javelin with a 35.13-meter throw (115 feet, 3 inches) that’s No. 5 in school history.
The 4 x 100 relay team took third with a time of 48.91 that was .07 faster than SBCC’s previous record, set in 1992. The new record holders are Sara Jungersten, Emily Walker, Kalina Rock and Samantha Wikmark.
Nine Vaquero women qualified for the So Cal Prelims, including both relays.
