Westmont Women’s Tennis, ranked at No. 7 in the NAIA, wrapped up a perfect Golden State Athletic Conference season with an 8-1 win over Hope International (4-15, 4-6 GSAC) in Fullerton.
The Warriors completed the regular season with an overall record of 15-2 and a conference mark of 10-0. The accomplishment marks the first time Westmont has gone undefeated in conference play since 1999 when the Warriors were also 10-0.
The regular season GSAC champs will enter next weeks GSAC Tournament as the number one seed and receive a first round bye. The tournament will be held at Indian Wells Tennis Garden with the first round being held on Wednesday, April 10. Semifinals will be played at noon the following day and the championship game will take place on Friday at 10:00 a.m.
Westmont will open tournament play in the semifinals against the winner between fourth-seeded Hope International and fifth-seeded Arizona Christian (7-15, 2-8).
Ninth-rated Concordia (9-10, 8-2), the number two seed, also receives a first-round bye and will take on the winner between third-seeded Vanguard (9-14, 5-5) and sixth-seeded Biola (3-16, 1-9) in the other semifinal game.
Today’s match began with singles play and was decided before doubles play could get under way. Emily Keach claimed the first point for the Warriors, defeating Jeannette Rodriguez 6-1, 6-1 on court number three. Haley Strandness made it 2-0 in favor of the Warriors after winning by the same score on court five over Becca Roeser.
Alyson Meyer picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win over Alyssa Pritchett on court number six before Jessica Cedillo finished off Caroline Houston 6-4, 6-1 at number one. Carolyn Stevens earned the decisive fifth point with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Sabrina Miller.
Hope’s lone win came at number two singles where Jasmine Zaragoza defeated Grace Davis 6-1, 6-2.
Having already clenched the match, the Warriors went on to sweep doubles. Stevens and Strandness earned an 8-6 win over Roeser and Pritchett at number three. Cedillo and Tara Yekrang took the win on court one, defeating Houston and Miller 8-5. Number two doubles went to Davis and Keach who dispatched Zaragoza and Rodriguez 8-5.
