Fifth-ranked Westmont Men’s Tennis (10-9, 8-2 GSAC), posted a 9-0 win over Hope International (4-15, 3-7) on Saturday to conclude Golden State Athletic Conference regular season play. The Warriors finished in second place in the GSAC standings and will enter next week’s GSAC Tournament as the number two seed.
The tournament will be conducted at the Indian Wells Tennis Gardens beginning with first round action on Wednesday, April 10. Westmont will receive a first round bye and begin play in Thursday’s semifinals against the winner between third-seeded Concordia (10-10, 6-4) and sixth-seeded Biola (2-15, 1-9).
Thursday’s semifinals will begin at 9:00 a.m. with the championship game scheduled for a 10:00 a.m. start on Friday.
Third-ranked Vanguard, which finished the season with a perfect 19-0 overall record (10-0 GSAC), will be the number one seed and will also receive a first round bye. In the other semifinal, the Lions will take on the winner between fourth-seeded Hope International and fifth-seeded Arizona Christian (5-16, 2-8).
The Warriors swept doubles play against the Royals in today’s match to take a 3-0 lead. At number one, Tim Goranson and John Bertram dispatched Enzo Correa and Thiago Brito 8-1. Rodrigo Schaefer and Joshua Barnard won by a score of 8-2 at number two, defeating Tyler McDonald and Jake Barnard. The third set was won 8-5 by Nick Szyndlar and Travis Kimsey over Leonardo Pires and Philipp Geber.
The first singles victory came on court number one where Goranson defeated John-Douglas Owens 6-3, 6-1. Bertram won the match on court three 6-1, 6-1 over Pires to claim the fifth point and secure the team win.
On court number four, cousins Josh Barnard of Westmont and Jake Barnard of Hope International squared off against each other. The Westmont Barnard claimed the win 6-1, 6-1.
Schaefer won on the number two court, defeating Correa 6-3, 6-0 while Szyndlar cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win at number five.
On court number six, Gerrit Dickey posted a 6-4 win over Brito in the first set but lost the second set 6-0. A super-tiebreaker was played to decide the outcome with Dickey prevailing 10-4.
