Santa Barbara High’s No. 3 doubles team of Austin Trevillian and Jake Sutton upended Corona del Mar’s No. 1 pair to highlight the Dons’ day in a 13-5 loss to the second-ranked Sea Kings on Saturday.
“The Sea King doubles team is one of the top teams in CIF, while it is the first time Austin and Jake have played together all season and Jake is not a regular starter for the Dons,” said coach Greg Tebbe “Their match was the most impressive victory I have witnessed in my five years of coaching high school tennis. It is a huge upset and they really shocked the entire Sea King and Santa Barbara team.”
The sixth-ranked Dons (11-6) fell behind 5-1 after the first round and couldn’t make up the difference.
Despite the loss, Tebbe said he liked how the team fought back against the 13-1 Sea Kings.
“We were down 1-5 after the first round as we were a bit intimidated by our opponents but we came back strong in the second round where we played them even 3-3,” he said. “When it was all said and done, the Sea Kings were just a bit too strong for us, but our guys realize that we can compete with this team and I would look forward to a rematch if we end up meeting them in the playoffs.”
The Dons were led by their No. 1 doubles team of Mitchell Kuhn and Jordan Rodnick who won two out of three sets against a strong Sea King doubles lineup.
Next up for the Dons is key Channel League match against Dos Pueblos on Tuesday at the SBHS courts.
