SBCC’s Bruna Magalhaes, a freshman from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, won the WSC women’s tennis singles title on Friday at Ventura College by beating Sonia Landeros of Ventura 6-2, 6-3.
Magalhaes, who’s 13-0 on the season, was the No. 1 seed and Landeros was No. 2. Magalhaes and Nadya Bravo also played in the doubles final on Friday, falling to Kaori Tsuda and Juliana Nelkin of Santa Monica 6-2, 6-3.
Magalhaes qualfied for the Southern Cal Regional at the historic Ojai Tournament on April 25-26. She and Bravo will also play in the Regional doubles tourney.
It’s only the second time a WSC champion has been crowned in the last 25 years. The WSC Tourney usually stops at the quarterfinal stage..
Magalhaes is the first WSC women’s champion from SBCC in 28 years since Sally Ostrander won in 1985.
“As sweet as this victory is for Bruna, the SBCC Women’s Tennis program and the SBCC Athletic Department, there is still plenty of work that lies ahead,” said first-year coach Ken Thomas. “Bruna’s goal is to win the State Championship. The WSC title is nice, the undefeated record in conference play is nice but the goal is to win the State Championship.”
