San Marcos edged Arroyo Grande on Wednesday in a non-league match that was decided on games 81-75.
The Royals escaped with the victory in large part due to two tiebreak victories in the second round. Luca Ferrari clinched the win for the Royals in the final round with a 7-5 win over Sean Hollister.
Arroyo Grande, the No. 7 team in Division 3, started out with a 4-2 lead.
But San Marcos’ Oliver Piltch won a tiebreaker in singles, followed by a 7-6 (6) win by the doubles team of Jack Haley and Travis Smelley after the duo had fell behind 1-4.
“The match hinged on those two sets and AG served to win both of them. Oliver, Jack and Travis persevered and were focused on fighting for every point and that turned out to be the difference today,” reported Royals head coach Jarrod Bradley. “We’ve stressed being mentally tough and giving extra effort and these guys exemplified that today.”
San Marcos plays again on Friday against Cate.
