Santa Barbara High’s boys tennis team clinched its 13th straight Channel League championship and the 48th in the past 49 years on Monday as the Dons defeated Dos Pueblos 14-4.
Santa Barbara’s dominating run includes victories in 113-straight league matches.
“I am proud of this group which has carried on the long tradition of excellence for Santa Barbara high school tennis,” reported Dons head coach Greg Tebbe.
The No. 1 positions took care of business for the Dons, with Graham Maassen sweeping three sets and the top doubles team of Avery Chernin and Morgan Hale doing the same. The Dons claimed 8-of-9 singles points in total.
Dos Pueblos’ top doubles team of Mason Casady and Joshua Wang won two-of-three for half of DP’s point total. The Chargers were Santa Barbara’s biggest threat to an unbeaten league season as DP has beaten every other league opponent.
“What I appreciated about the Chargers is their tenacity through each round. They did not give up and stayed positive,” said Chargers head coach Liz Frech.
A win tomorrow at San Marcos would be Santa Barbara’s 13th straight perfect league season.
Dos Pueblos’ final league match is also on Tuesday, at Ventura. The Channel League Tournament is next week.
