Catalina Maldonado struck out 11 and allowed only two hits, and Carpinteria scored single runs in the second and fourth innings to beat San Marcos 2-1 in a non-league girls softball game at Carpinteria.
Maldonado faced off against Kristen Berlo of San Marcos. Berlo had been sidelined with an injury.
“Catalina was very strong on the mound, and Bethany Lugo was an offensive threat on the base paths,” said Carpinteria coach Henry Gonzalez.
Carpinteria took a 1-0 lead in the second. Teegan Singer led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on an infield single by Lugo and scored on a passed ball.
San Marcos tied the score in the third.
In the fourth, Lugo reached first on a dropped third strike, stole second and third and scored the eventual game-winning run on wild pitch. She had four stolen bases and two hits in the game.
Carpinteria improves to 9-6 overall.
