Seven Santa Barbarans on CIF-SS list of top 100 athletes

Santa Barbara is well represented on a recently released list of the CIF-Southern Section’s 100 greatest athletes in the organization’s 100 years.

Seven athletes from the community are on the list. They are: Eddie Mathews (Santa Barbara High baseball, graduated in 1949), Sam Cunningham (Santa Barbara High football, 1969), Jamal Wilkes (Santa Barbara High basketball, 1970), Terry Schroeder (San Marcos water polo, 1977), Karch Kiraly (Santa Barbara High volleyball, 1978), Todd Rogers (San Marcos volleyball, 1991) and Kami Craig (Santa Barbara High girls water polo, 2005).

The athletes on the list represent the inaugural class for the CIF-SS Hall of Fame.

The criteria for selection included success in a sport while attending high school and continued success in the college and professional ranks, as well as international competition like the Olympics.

Female athletes that participated at a CIF-SS high school during the period that the section did not recognize girls athletics were included as the opportunity at those times was denied them outside of their control.

Finally, athletes that now participate in other sections, but competed in the CIF-SS during the time their school was a member of the CIF-SS were also included on this list.

The committee making the selections included sportswriters, producers, on-air personalities, local historians and past and former members of the CIF-SS staff and Executive Committee.

Here is the complete list of 100 athletes:
