Santa Barbara High’s Tanner Mjelde has been named male High School Runner of the Month.
The senior middle-distance runner, a team-captain, is one of the Dons most improved runners this year while maintaining one of the team’s highest GPA in the classroom.
He’s a member of the Math Honor Society and manages the school’s video bulletin.
Mjelde recently chose Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for college.
“He’s a leader but he’s just an absolute-team guy,” says Dons head coach Olivia Perdices. “He will do anything for any kid on the team, anytime they need it.”
Mjelde competes for the Dons in the 800 meter run and 4×100 relay, and has anchored their 4×400 relay team. He also competes for the cross country team in the fall. While he is not Santa Barbara’s fastest athlete, Mjelde has shown consistent improvement during his high school career.
“He’s a great guy. Nicest kid you’ll ever meet,” Perdices said.
The High School Runner of the Month award recognizes local prep runners who exemplify the term “student-athlete” and who are active in the community.
