IRVINE – Junior Glen Scher, who won the individual title at the Sacramento State Invitational in March, has been named the Big West Conference Golfer of the Month, the league announced Thursday.
Scher shot an 8-under par 208 to win the Sac State tourney at the Valley Hi Country Club on Mar. 11-12. In the first round of the event, he carded a season-best 5-under par 67 and he was below par for all three rounds.
The finish in Sacramento wasn’t the only reason Scher earned the Player of the Month honor. He recorded a recorded a 6-under par 210 at the Fresno State Lexus Classic on Mar. 4-5, finishing tied for seventh. When Scher had three below-par rounds at the Sac State Invitational, it gave him six straight at or below-par rounds with five being below-par. Last week, on Mar. 25-26, he finished tied for sixth at the Anteater Invitational with a 5-over par 221. He did shoot a 2-under par 70 in the final round and has now had four consecutive top-10 finishes.
“Three top-10 finishes in a calendar month and four straight top-10s over the course of a month,” said UCSB head coach Steve Lass. “I can’t remember a Gaucho ever accomplishing that. It’s an outstanding achievement.”
The win at Sacramento State was the second of Scher’s career. As a sophomore in 2010-11, he shot a 7-under par 209 to win the Barona Collegiate Cup. He redshirted the 2011-12 campaign and returned as a junior this season.
