MEADOW VISTA – UC Santa Barbara’s Glen Scher, who has already won a pair of tournaments this year, narrowly missed claiming his third title as he finished second at the Winchester Classic at the Winchester Golf Course in Meadow Vista. The tournament was hosted by UC Davis.
Scher was under-par in all three rounds of the tournament. He shot 1-under 71 in the first round and then in each of the next two rounds, he carded a 2-under par 70. He finished two-shots back of Oklahoma Christian’s Sam Johnston, who completed his three rounds at 7-under par 209.
Scher has been on a roll all season. He has not only won two tourneys, but he has finished in the top-10 in six straight This weekend, he and Johnston battled to the final day, when each shot 2-under par 70, to arrive at his final 5-under par 211.
UCSB’s Brett Silvermail led after the first round with a 3-under par 69, but finished at 3-over pr 219. A 78 in the second round was his undoing.
As a team, the Gauchos fiished in fourth-place in the 11-team field. Cal State Fullerton won the team title a 4-over par 868, five shots ahead of UC Davis, nine ahead of Oklahoma Christian and 12 ahead of UCSB.
Santa Barbara’s Marshall Colby tied for 26th at 9-over par 225, while Jordan Epstein was 12-over par 228 and Amol Mahal was 18-over par 234.
UCSB returns to action at the Big West Conference Championships. The league tourney will be held from April 28-30 at Soboba Springs Golf Course in San Jacinto, Calif.
