SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Glen Scher shot a 2-under par 138 to win his second tournament of the season and third of his career, claiming individual medalist honors at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic at the Talking Stick Golf Club North Course in Scottsdale on Tuesday.
The tournament was shortened to 36 holes because of Monday’s strong winds in the Phoenix area.
Scher’s performance was two-shots better than Mac McClung and Jonathan De Los Reyes of St. Mary’s as well as Utah’s Daniel Engle and Tulsa’s Logan McCracken. In fact, Scher was the only player in the tournament to shoot under par and he was just one of three players to shoot par during Monday’s wind-blown first round.
“Without live scoring it was impossible to know how Glen stood coming down the stretch,” sad UCSB head coach Steve Lass. “But I saw good shot after good shot and he certainly looked like a winner to me, and indeed he was.”
Scher followed-up his first-round 70 with a 2-under par 68 on Tuesday. Not only has the junior won two of his last three tournaments, he has finished in the top-10 in five straight. He also won the title at the Sacramento State Invitational two weeks ago.
As a team, the Gauchos finished in three-way tie for 14th in the 24-team event. Along with Hawaii and Boise State, they finished two shots back of Wyoming and five shots behind UC Riverside. Gonzaga won the tournament by six shots over Colorado and eight over Tulsa and St. Mary’s.
Amol Mahal finished with a 10-over par 150 to tie for 47th in the 126-player field. Jordan Epstein was 14-over par at 154, tying for 80th.
UCSB will next compete at the Winchester Classic at the Winchester Country Club in Meadow Vista, Calif. The three-day tournament will be played April 19-21.
