GLF: Scher, Gauchos move up on Big West Tournament’s second day


 

SAN JACINTO – UC Santa Barbara shot a 292 in the second round at the 2013 Big West Golf Championships, the third-best round of the day, and jumped from a tie for ninth-place into sixth-place entering Tuesday’s final round. The tournament is being played at The Country Club at Soboba Springs.

RESULTS

Glen Scher led the Gauchos’ charge carding a 2-under par 70 on the day. He moved from 19th-place into a tie for fourth-place in the indivivdual standings at 1-over par 145 after two rounds. Brett Silvernail also had a solid outing. After beginning the second round in a tie with Scher for 19th, he jumped into a tie for 13th by shooting a 1-over par 73. He is now at 4-over par 148.

Jordan Epstein improved on his first round score by two shots as he shot a 3-over par 75 and is now 8-over par for the tournament, in 31st-place. Amol Mahal, who struggled with a 79 on Sunday, checked in with a 2-over par 74 on Monday and is now tied for 32nd at 9-over par 153. Marshall Colby shot 81 and is now 15 over for the tourney.

As a team, the sixth-place Gauchos are just one shot back of Hawaii, which led the tournament entering the day. After scoring a 292 in the first round on Sunday, the Warriors shot 304 on Monday and are now 20-over par as compared to UCSB’s 21-over par. Long Beach State is fourth at 17-over par, UC Davis is third at 16-over, Cal State Fullerton is second at 15-over and Pacific, which carded the second round’s best score at 289, leads the way at 11-over par.

Fullerton’s Corey Gard entered the day tied for first and ended the day in first by himself. He is at 4-under par after two rounds, three shots ahead of Pacific’s Eric Sugimoto. Sugimoto was 3-under par for Monday’s round to move from a tie for 12th into second all alone. Nainoa Calip, who was tied with Gard for first entering the day, shot 3-over par and is even-par and in third. Scher is one of three players tied for fourth.

On Tuesday, UCSB will be paired with players from Long Beach State and Hawaii and will tee-off at 8:35 a.m. The top three teams – Pacific, Fullerton and Davis – go off beginning at 9:25.
