Steven Lam of SBCC fired rounds of 68 and 69 to take medalist honors in the 36-hole WSC Men’s Golf Finals on Monday and the Vaqueros handed Canyons its first loss in WSC No. 9.
Lam, a freshman from Hong Kong, China, finished at 7-under 137 to beat Luke Kristo of Canyons by two shots at Soule Park GC in Ojai. The 68 was a season low for Lam.
The Vaqueros shot a season-best, 1-over 361 to capture WSC No. 9, topping the Cougars by eight shots. Canyons bounced back to take WSC No. 10 in the afternoon, beating Santa Barbara 358-371.
Dodge Ward, a sophomore from San Marcos High, shot even-par 144 (70-74) to finish sixth for the Vaqueros. Blake McPherson turned in rounds of 73 and 75 for a 4-over 148.
Lam, McPherson and Charlie Holyoke (74-77–151) were named to the All-WSC team. They all qualified for the Regional as individuals, as did Ward.
“We finally beat Canyons,” said McPherson. “We prevented them from having a perfect season.”
The Cougars finished conference with a 59-1 record and earned a spot in the Southern Cal Regional, along with WSC runner-up SBCC (49-11) and Glendale (32-28).
The 36-hole Regional will take place on Monday, May 6 at Costa Mesa CC with the top two teams advancing to the State Championships.
