Sophomore outfielder Zach Zehner went 5-6 with two doubles and six RBIs on Thursday, leading SBCC to a 20-7 WSC North baseball rout of L.A. Pierce in Woodland Hills.
The first-place Vaqueros (14-12, 6-4) have won two straight and four of their last five. They took an early 5-1 lead before Pierce (9-17, 3-7) tied it with four in the fourth.
Santa Barbara broke it open with six runs in the fifth. Tyler Sharpe blasted his first homer and Zehner had a two-out, three-run double. SBCC added four more in the sixth to go up 15-5.
Brett Sesma was 3-7 with three RBIs while Colby Taylor and Andy Smith went 3-6 on a day when the Vaqueros posted season highs in runs and hits (23). Zehner, Taylor and Mark Jebbia each had two doubles.
Tony Simon extended his hitting streak to 21 games with a single in the third.
Shortstop Steven Reveles was 3-5 with three runs and two stolen bases, boosting his state-leading total to 27. Reveles moved up to second with a .432 batting average in WSC games.
“It was a good performance offensively,” said coach Jeff Walker. “We got Vaqueros on and we got Vaqueros in. It was great to see us compete against the game like this as we opened the second half of conference.”
Brendon Shoemake (4-2) went seven innings to earn the win, giving up six runs but just two earned. “He didn’t have his best stuff but he was a warrior,” said Walker.
The Vaqueros host Ventura on Saturday at 1 p.m.
