CBB: Late surge not enough for Vaqueros

SBCC scored three in the ninth on Tuesday but couldn’t push across the tying run in an 8-7 WSC North baseball loss at Ventura.

The Pirates (14-13, 7-5) moved into a three-way tie for first in conference with the Vaqueros (15-13, 7-5) and Cuesta. Ventura took the season series with SBCC, 3-1.

Vaquero left fielder Tony Simon singled with no outs in the ninth to extend his hitting streak to 23 games. Mark Jebbia went 2-3 at the plate.

After Santa Barbara tied the score 4-4 with two runs in the fourth, Ventura scored one in the fifth and three in the sixth to go up 8-4. The Vaqueros rallied in the ninth, thanks to a couple of hit batters and hits but couldn’t get the equalizer.

“We were pretty disengaged both offensively and defensively but we did battle back a few times,” said coach Jeff Walker. “We loaded the bases in the ninth and had the tying run on first. We couldn’t get the timely hits when we needed them.”

The Vaqueros take on Hancock in Santa Maria on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
