Albert Flores tossed a four-hitter on Tuesday and Compton used two home runs to top SBCC 6-3 in a Southern Cal Regional baseball opener at the Urban Youth Academy.
The Tartars (22-15), who tied for second in the South Coast Conference, snapped the Vaqueros’ three-game win streak. After giving up a run in the third, SBCC (20-17) grabbed a 3-1 advantage in the sixth on a two-run single by Tony Simon and a sacrifice fly by Tyler Sharp.
Juan Avena, who’s batting .400, tied it up with a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth off Vaquero starter Tyler Gilbert. Chris Jacobs gave Compton a 4-3 lead with his state-leading eighth home run, a solo shot in the seventh.
The Vaquero pitching staff only allowed one homer in 36 regular-season games.
Shortstop Steven Reveles, the WSC North Player of the Year, singled in the third and finished his SBCC career on a 12-game hit streak.
Compton, which has won 12 of its last 14, moves on to face top-seeded Fullerton in a best-of-3 series this weekend.
