Zach Ell belted a mammoth three-run homer to dead-center field in the first inning, sparking Cate’s baseball team to a 14-4 win over Ojai Valley on Saturday.
The Owls improve to 3-0 in the Condor League and 11-1 overall.
Cate scored in every inning except the third. Ell was 3-for-3 on the day. Fellow junior Carlos Fairbanks also had three hits and drove in three runs. Ryan Baird ripped a double in the fifth inning. The Rams took advantage of the seven OVS errors.
On the mound, sophomore Humza Khurshid pitched the first three innings. While he found himself in some trouble, Khurshid wiggled out of every jam. Junior Chris Oh came in for just his third appearance of the year. With two outs in the top of the fifth, freshman James Chang made his varsity debut.
Defensively, Djata Nyaawie made a highlight-reel catch to rob an OVS hitter of an extra base hit.
“We are happy to come away with a win and continue to get better moving forward,” assistant coach Dave Soto said.
