UC Santa Barbara sophomore forward Alan Williams has been selected Second Team All-District 9 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches it was announced Wednesday.
Williams had one of the best seasons ever for a Gaucho post player. He finished the year averaging 17.1 points, 10.7 rebounds, 2.3 blocked shots and 1.0 steals per game as he was named First Team All-Big West. Williams became the first UCSB player since Eric McArthur in 1990 to average a double-double and his 15 double-doubles on the season were the most since McArthur had 23 that same season.
Williams finished first in the Big West in rebounding, fourth in scoring and second in blocked shots, despite playing much of the second half of the season with a hamstring tendon injury that cost him almost four full games.
“Alan had a great year for us,” said head coach Bob Williams. “He became one of the best players in our conference and in our district and I am happy for him that the NABC recognized that.”
Williams had more than one monster game in 2012-13. In a must-win game at Cal State Northridge on Mar. 2, he scored a career-high 32 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. He had 21 of the points and 11 of the rebounds in the second half alone. On Dec. 1, in an overtime win at Santa Clara, Williams had 29 points and a career-high 17 rebounds.
