TRK: UCSB’s Haag outleaps all

Mitchell Haag won the high jump with a leap of 7’02.50″ and was named the Field Athlete of the Meet, helping the UC Santa Barbara men’s team to a third-place finish at the Cal/Nevada Championships at UC San Diego on Saturday. The Gaucho women’s team finished fourth.

Haag’s winning jump gave him the victory over teammate Max Villaba who finished second with a mark of 6’08.75″.

The Gauchos piled-up several other wins and high finishes on the men’s side, including victories in the 4×100 and 4×400 meter relays. In the 4×100, Nate Harvey, Jacob Vowels, Michael Aiken and Marquis Caldwell ran a 41.32 to edge a foursome from Sacramento State which clocked a 41.36. In the 4×400, it was Vowels, Caldwell, Eric Severiano and Jimmy Martin coming in with a time of 3:12.32 to win by more than a second.

In addition to his wins in the relays, Caldwell also won the 400 meters with a time of 46.95.

Shyan Vaziri posted a victory in the 800 meters in a time of 1:50.17, while Juan Paredes won the 1,500 in 3:55.98 and Abel Mogesse claimed the 10,000 meters in 30:55.03. Evan Walker was third in the 100 meter final with a time of 10.72 while Sean Johnson ran a 14.80 in the 110 meter hurdles to finish fifth.

In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Andrew Farkas, Bryce Rausa and Austin Goodheart finished 3, 4. 5 and in the 5,000 meters, Bryan Guijarro was third at 14:38.32.

Sacramento State won the men’s competition with 166 points followed by Nevada with 136.5 and then UCSB at 129.5.

On the women’s side, Jennifer Carey led the Gauchos win a win in the 400 meters as she clocked a 54.47 to win by more than a second over the second-place runner from San Diego State.

Amanda Rodriguez was second in the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 59.94. Jessica Chadwick and Ariana Selix finished 2-3 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with time of 10:47.34 and 10:48.20 respectively.

Sarah Schreck was fourth in the 10,000 meters, running a 36:51.37, while Cassie Brooker was sixth in the 1,500 meters at 4:32.19.

UCSB’s 4×400 meter foursome of Cherrelle McMillian, Alyssa Schlom, Jennifer Carey and Amanda Rodriguez finished second with t time of 3:47.02.

In the field events, the Gauchos were paced by Irene Kujor who placed third in the shot put with a mark of 48’09”, seventh in the discus at 154’07” and eighth in the hammer at 168’09”. Veronica Gines was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 18’09.25″ and seventh in the hammer at 169’11”. Jennifer Melton and Grace Esslinger were sixth and seventh in the javelin with throws of 127’03” and 123’10” respectively.

The women’s team competition was won by San Diego State which scored 166 points. Nevada was second at 136.5, Sacramento State third at 109.5 and UCSB fourth at 83.5.
