Santa Barbara High advanced to the final of the prestigious California Tennis Classic for the first time in program history and lost a competitive match against Menlo on Saturday in Fresno.
“It was due to a complete team effort,” said Santa Barbara coach Greg Tebbe of the Dons success in the tournament. “Significant contributions were made by all the players throughout the tournament.”
Santa Barbara defeated Monta Vista, 6-1, in the semifinals and fell to Menlo in the final, 6-1.
“Santa Barbara played its best tennis of this young season, which enabled them to defeat a strong Monta Vista team in the semifinals,” said Tebbe.
Graham Maassen, Jordan Rodnick and Ryan Chung won their singles sets and the Dons swept the doubles against Monta Vista.
In the final, the doubles team of Mitchell Kuhn-Jackson Powell scored the lone win for the Dons.
“Overall, our doubles teams produced a dominant effort, winning 10 of 12 matches in the tournament and our singles players won an impressive 7 of 16 matches against top-ranked players in all four of their team matches,” said Tebbe.
