Indianapolis, Ind. – Making their NCAA Division I Championship debuts, sophomore Wade Allen tackled the 100 butterfly and senior Tim Freeman swam the 100 breaststroke in their first events on Friday held at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.
Coming into the 100 breaststroke, Freeman was seeded 17th with his school-record qualifying time of 53.08. In the preliminaries he was unable to keep pace with his best time and touched the wall in 54.23. His time placed him 36th out of 41.
“At this point in the season it’s a lot more mental than physical,” head coach Gregg Wilson said. “There are a lot of big names at the championships and you have to control your emotions.”
Allen was seeded 23rd heading into the 100 butterfly with his also school-record time of 46.65. He too faltered in the preliminaries, only finishing in 33rd out of 42 touching the wall in 47.41.
“Both of our guys were seeded very well and they had been doing very well in practice leading up to their events,” Wilson said. “They’re both disappointed right now but we’ll look to get back at it tomorrow.”
Allen will compete in the 100 freestyle tomorrow with Freeman competing in the 200 breaststroke.
