FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Tim Freeman broke his own school record for the second time this season in the 100 breaststroke and UCSB broke another school record in the 400 free relay on day three of the Pac-12 Championships at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
Freeman touched the wall in a school record time of 53.39 coming in the preliminary heat for the 100 breaststroke. He held the previous record time of 53.60 which he set by breaking his own record earlier in the year. His time qualified him for the ‘A’ final which he finished sixth overall with an NCAA ‘B’ standard time of 53.58.
UCSB set another school record on the day in the 400 medley relay. Randy Aakhus, Freeman, Wade Allen and Ryan Hanni led the Gauchos to a sixth place overall finish with their time of 3:13.11. They beat the previous record from 2009 held by Ferguson, Sudbury, McClary and Vogelgesang whose time was 3:14.39.
Three other Gauchos would qualify for finals in the 100 breast. Tyler Jean qualified for the ‘B’ final and finished 16th overall (55.69). Andy Castilleja won the ‘C’ final placing him 17th overall as he topped his season-best time finishing in 55.55. Andrew Latimer rounded out the Gaucho finshers as he came in 22nd overall after qualifying for the ‘C’ final (57. 86).
Aakhus advanced to the ‘B’ final in the 400 IM for UCSB and he would finish 14th overall. Aakhus beat his season best in the event with a time of 3:51.55 which is an NCAA ‘B’ standard time. Andrew Barmann also competed in the event and finished 22nd overall after making it to the ‘C’ final (4:01.29).
After advancing to the ‘A’ final in the 50 free last night, Allen advanced to the ‘A’ final once more this time in the 100 fly. He finished seventh overall with an NCAA ‘B’ standard time of 46.69. Mickey Mowry competed in the ‘B’ final finishing 15th overall (48.74), and Chris Dotson took a 22nd place overall finish in the ‘C’ final (50.94).
The 200 free featured a trio of Gauchos who all qualified for the ‘C’ final. Led by Lucas Norman who finished 20th overall (1:38.62), Chase Lemley 22nd (1:39.03) and Alexander Campbell 24th (1:40.91).
Collin Baratte was the lone UCSB swimmer who would qualify for a final in the 100 back. He would win the ‘C’ final leading to a 17th place overall finish (50.62). The time was his fastest on the season.
In the men’s three-meter diving competition, Erich Brodbeck had the top Gaucho score once again on his way to a 19th overall finish. He posted a team high score of 194.10.
After three days of events the Gauchos find themselves in seventh place overall with 128 points.
The Pac-12 Championships will conclude tomorrow after the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 400 free relay, and the platform diving competition
