Long Beach – UC Santa Barbara finished Saturday’s doubleheader off with a bang by handing Charleston Southern University a 12-0 loss in five innings at the Long Beach State Mayfair Invitational.
Eight Gauchos had base hits in the game after the team recorded only one in the game prior against North Dakota State University.
Shelby Wisdom had a stellar performance on both sides of the ball. In the circle, she struck out a season-high eight batters while allowing four hits and zero walks. She improved to 10-4 on the season with the win.
Wisdom was also one of three Gauchos to record a multi-hit performance as well. She knocked in another season-high six runs with a 4-for-4 day at the plate, stroking two doubles and a triple en route to the win.
UCSB (16-7) scored in all five innings of the contest, notching three runs in the first, four in the second, two in both the third and fourth frames and one in the fifth.
Freshman Arianna Palomares also continued her hot start to the season, going 2-for-4 with two RBI’s and a double. She leads the team with a .422 batting average and a .641 slugging percentage in her debut season.
Jessica Soria provided three runs for the Gauchos in the contest, going 2-for-2 at the plate while also drawing a walk.
CSU threatened to score in both the fourth and fifth innings. The Buccaneers’ Linzy Rother moved Jana Matthews to third base in the fourth inning with a two-out double, and CSU also loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth inning. Wisdom pitched her way out of both jams, however, to escape trouble and keep the shutout intact.
UCSB lost to South Dakota State 7-1 in its other game on Saturday. McKenzie Kane recorded the Gauchos’ only hit.
