SBCC swept past L.A. Pierce 7-1 and 3-0 in its first WSC Gold softball doubleheader on Thursday at Pershing Park.
Alice Cen and Samantha Cabada each had two hits and scored twice in the opener. Natalie Orosco had a two-run single in the sixth for the Vaqueros (5-10, 2-0).
Left-hander Victoria Lucido got the pitching win, going all seven innings and allowing just one run on six hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
In the nightcap, Alexandra Abbott tossed a one-hit shutout with nine strikeouts. She also had eight walks, including three in the top of the seventh. The Brahmas (3-10, 0-2) loaded the bases with two outs but Abbott struck out the cleanup hitter to end the game.
“I felt good out there and it was good to know I had a defense behind me,” said Abbott, a freshman from Fresno. “My curveball and changeup were working well. This is a great way to start conference.”
In the first game, SBCC scored two in the first and two in the third to take a 4-1 lead. Alice Cen doubled and scored on a passed ball in the third and Orosco walked, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on an error.
The Brahmas committed five errors, leading to four unearned runs.
“Victoria had good control on the mound in the first game and our hitters came through,” said coach Paula Congleton. “We did some really good things and we were excited going into the second game.
“Our offense wasn’t great in the second game but Alex pitched a fantastic game. Our offensive production needs to be a lot better.”
Abbott fanned five of the first seven batters in the nightcap. She also drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly in the second that scored Danielle deCastro. Lucido pinch hit in the sixth and delivered a two-run single up the middle.
Catcher Sierra Lujano went 2-3 in the second game.
The Vaqueros play host to Hancock on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
