Alex Abbott tossed a two-hitter in the first game and Alice Cen went 3-4 with three runs on Thursday as SBCC swept a softball doubleheader with Oxnard at Pershing Park.
The Vaqueros (9-16, 5-3 WSC Gold) won the opener 8-0 in six innings and took the nightcap 10-2 in five innings. The games were shortened by the eight-run rule.
Oxnard is 0-18 and 0-6.
Abbott had an RBI single in the first inning of the opener and Tianna Velasquez stretched the lead to 3-0 with a long two-run homer to left with two outs in the second.
The Vaqueros scored three times in the sixth. Cen delivered an RBI single, went to third on Shannon Kelly’s hit and scored on a wild pitch. Amanda Caras ended the first game with an infield single that scored Kelly.
Cen, a freshman shortstop, was 4-7 on the day with five runs, two RBIs and three stolen bases.
“We came to play today and hit the ball well,” said Cen. “I was focused on the ball.”
SBCC had 11 hits in each game. Winning pitcher Victoria Lucido (6-8) gave up just one earned run on five hits in the second game and Samantha Cabada and Karen Ochoa led the offense by going 2-3. Ochoa knocked in two runs and scored twice.
“We expected good things today and they did a great job,” said coach Paula Congleton. “Our pitching was good and we got a nice home run from Tianna. That must have gone 220 feet.
“We wanted to make it a short day today. This is a great step for us going into a big weekend.”
The Vaqueros tallied five runs in the second inning of the nightcap on four hits and three walks to go ahead 6-0. After Oxnard scored a pair, Santa Barbara ended it in the bottom of the fifth.
Dakotah Wilcox had a leadoff double and Kiersty Briner singled. Ochoa and Abbott followed with RBI singles and Cen drove in Ochoa to make it 9-2. Cabada delivered the walk-off hit with an RBI single up the middle.
The Vaqueros will play four games in their 13th annual Bash at the Beach this weekend. On Saturday, they’ll take on East L.A. at 11 a.m. and Fullerton at 2:30 p.m.
