Victoria Lucido went 3-4 and drove in three runs on Saturday, leading SBCC to a come-from-behind 9-7 win over Fullerton in the 13th annual Bash at the Beach softball tournament at Pershing Park.
The Vaqueros (10-17) dropped their first game to East L.A. 6-1. Santa Barbara had 10 hits, including two by Lucido, but stranded 10 runners on base.
Lucido was 5-6 on the day with three RBIs and two runs. The left-hander pitched a complete game against Fullerton, giving up six earned runs on nine hits. She allowed three homers, including two by Alexandria Avila, who had five RBIs.
The Vaqueros rallied from a 4-1 deficit with four unearned runs in the fourth and four more in the sixth. Lucido put her team ahead 5-4 with a one-out double in the fourth that scored Sierra Lujano and Alex Abbbott.
“I had confidence I was going to get a hit in every at-bat today,” said Lucido, a 5-1 freshman from Pacific Grove. “This was the first time we showed signs that we’re going to battle when we fall behind. We came through as a team, everyone was hitting.
“I’ve had better days pitching but my teammates picked me up with the bats.”
Fullerton (5-18) tied it at 5 on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Nicole Chapman in the sixth. Second baseman Amanda Caras made a spectacular diving catch near the first-base foul line and Alex Campo alertly tagged up and scored from third.
SBCC took a 9-5 lead in the sixth. Lujano and Alex Abbott walked and Karen Ochoa dropped an RBI single into left. Lucido followed with a run-scoring hit and Alice Cen drove in two more with a single to right. Cen was 3-4 in the first game.
“Victoria was a great sparkplug and did a great job on the mound,” said coach Paula Congleton. “The difference in the Fullerton game was that all the kids hit and that’s the way you win games.”
Saddleback and East L.A. both went 2-0 on the first day of the nine-team, round-robin tourney.
Play gets under way at 9 a.m. on Sunday. The Vaqueros will host Saddleback at noon and Golden West at 3 p.m.
