SFT: Royals overcome Panthers in extras

San Marcos scored three times in the bottom of the eighth inning on Tuesday, coming from behind to win the extra-inning game 6-5 over Pioneer Valley.

The game was tied 3-3 after seven innings. The Panthers put the pressure on by taking a 5-3 lead in the top half of the eighth.

Down two runs with three outs to go, Cara Christian led off the inning with a single. Lyana Gonzalez then singled in Christian. Vicki Villegas reached on a fielder’s choice and scored the game-tying run on a double from Veronica Villarreal. Stephanie Swann drove home Villareal and the winning run with a single on the first pitch she saw.

Earlier in the game, Hannah Ball and Kristen Berlo each connected for home runs and finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Swann and Angel Mermis recorded two hits each.

Berlo also picked up the win by tossing all eight innings with 12 strikeouts.

The result improves San Marcos to 2-3 on the season and handed the Panthers (3-1) their first loss of the season.
