SBCC rallied with single runs in the sixth and seventh to tie Tuesday’s softball game, only to see Moorpark score two in the ninth to pull out a 6-4 WSC Gold victory at Pershing Park.
Catcher Sierra Lujano went 2-4 with two RBIs and Samantha Cabada, Natalie Orosco and Tianna Velasquez all had two hits for the Vaqueros (10-20, 5-4). Amanda Chatman went 4-5 with two runs for the Raiders (13-9, 5-2).
Chatman singled to lead off the ninth, went to third on a hit by Nicole Checkie and scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-4.
“We’re not bearing down when we need to,” said Vaquero coach Paula Congleton. “We need to go up to the plate with confidence in key situations and say, “Hey thank you for letting me bat because I’m going to drill in the next run.’
“Instead we’re all up tight and we freeze.”
SBCC took a 2-0 lead on Cabada’s RBI single in the first and Lujano’s run-scoring single down the left-field line in the second. Alex Abbott held Moorpark to no runs on four hits with four strikeouts in the first four innings.
The Raiders got three straight hits to open the fifth and went on to score four runs with the last two coming home on Vaquero errors. Victoria Lucido came on with one out in the fifth and pitched the final 4 2/3 innings for SBCC, allowing two runs on three hits.
“Mental errors hurt us today,” said Congleton. “We had some bad baserunning and we lost a fly ball in the sun. A lack of focus in certain situations really hurt us when we should have won the game in seven innings.”
Lujano delivered an RBI single with two outs in the sixth to score Abbott. The Vaqueros loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh on singles by Alice Cen, Orosco and Abbott. Amanda Caras hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored Cen and tied it at 4-4.
SBCC plays at L.A. Pierce on Tuesday, April 2 at 2:30 p.m.
