Local high school golf programs received a big boost at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon as Rich Nahas of Glen Annie Golf Club presented a large check to the golf coaches in attendance.

Despite the loss of the long-running High-Five Golf Tournament, Glen Annie remained committed to helping raise money for the high school golf programs.

A fundraising tournament was re-established this year and TaylorMade donated a package that included a new set of clubs, a bag and balls.

“The works,” described Nahas.

Glen Annie displayed the set in its pro shop for a month and raised $5,000 by selling raffle tickets.

Through its Touchstone Golf Foundation and the Bank of Santa Barbara, the check totaled $8,565. The schools were able to raise even more by selling their own raffle tickets.

“I’m sure you can agree with the times that are tough in schools right now with money anything that gives back without any restrictions to athletics is a great thing,” said Round Table President Rich Hanna.

Thirty-one student-athletes attended with their coaches or athletic directors.

After the check presentation, Laguna Blanca’s Clara Madsen was recognized as a Phil Womble Award recipient and Athletes of the Week Shane Hauschild and Tugce Canitez were announced.

The coaches reports covered 23 teams.

All of the high school and college golf programs had representatives present.

UCSB and SBCC have enjoyed recent team victories, with the Gauchos just having won the Sacramento State Invitational last weekend as Glen Scher captured the individual title.

Bishop Diego golf coach Peter Georgi brought players Trevor Taimuty and Jack Braniff, who is an offensive lineman on the football team.

From Santa Barbara High came Kevin Flynn and Fabio Rodriguez, from Carpinteria Cameron Cobbs and Taylor Hodgins, and from Laguna Blanca it was Cole Strachan and Kiyan Mashhoon.

Baseball also had a strong presence.

UCSB head coach Andrew Checketts and the Gauchos didn’t seem to get any bad luck from beating Notre Dame in St. Paddy’s week, going 3-1 starting with the win over the No. 17-ranked Irish.

The Carpinteria Warriors are off to a 2-0 start in the Frontier League. Head coach Pat Cooney brought Anthony Rodriguez, who bats leadoff and plays center field, and Derrick Moore.

George Rempe brought the left side of Santa Barbara High’s infield in John Brontsema and Jeff Paschke. Brontsema, who plays shortstop and bats third, is committed to play at UC Irvine next year. Paschke, an All-Channel League basketball player, bats cleanup and holds down third base on defense.

Dos Pueblos head coach Nick Katzenstein was joined by Dylan Rohde and Ben York. The Chargers won their first Channel League game in exciting fashion and travel to San Marcos on Tuesday for their next test.

Two of their soon-to-be opponents, San Marcos’ Josh Chittick and Duncan Proctor, were also introduced.

“These two guys are amazing, they’re great leaders on and off the field,” said San Marcos’ Aaron Solis.

More than one volleyball team is riding high at the moment.

San Marcos’ boys volleyball team featured Athlete of the Week Shane Hauschild. Royals head coach Roger Kuntz also brought players Baker Johnson and Christian Widmer
