SBCC sophomore Collin Cohen pounded 20 kills and dug 11 balls on Wednesday but it wasn’t enough to prevent a 3-2 men’s volleyball loss to L.A. Pierce in Woodland Hills.
The Vaqueros (3-6, 0-2 WSC) let a 2-1 set lead slip away. The scores were 21-25, 25-23, 24-26, 25-20, 17-15.
“The teams were very evenly matched,” said Vaquero coach Armen Zakarian. “It was back and forth all night. We played excellent in the first set and our passing was great.”
SBCC led 13-6 in the second set but couldn’t seal the deal. Overall, Pierce (5-4, 2-0) outscored the visitors by just three points, 112-109.
Dakota Smith added 14 kills and Aquiles Montoya had 10 block assists. Corey McDown, a 6-4 freshman from Hawaii, came off the bench and sparked SBCC at setter with 21 assists, eight digs and eight blocks in the last 2 1/2 games. Jarrod Lincoln had 12 digs.
“We took a step in the right direction,” Zakarian added. “We had a lot less hitting errors tonight.”
Santa Barbara will host Moorpark on Friday at 6 p.m.
