Collin Cohen collected 15 kills and hit .300 on Friday night but it wasn’t enough as SBCC dropped it’s WSC men’s volleyball opener 3-1 to El Camino in the Sports Pavilion. The scores were 25-21, 19-25, 25-22, 25-16.
The Vaqueros (3-5, 0-1) fell behind 9-4 and 14-7 in the first set. They pulled within one, 21-20, before the Warriors (4-4, 1-0) finished it with a 4-1 run.
“We came out a little flat in Game 1 and we’re not making very good hitting decisions right now,” said coach Armen Zakarian. “We have to be better attackers. We hit under .100 for the match.”
Aquiles Montoya added nine kills and Chris Utroske had eight in the middle. Jarred Lincoln racked up 13 digs while setter Drew Hogan had 39 assists, seven digs and two blocks.
The Vaqueros took control of the second set with a 6-0 run that boosted the lead to 16-8. Utroske served all six points and the run was capped by a block from Hogan. Brand finished off the 25-19 victory with a kill.
“We show flashes of brilliance, like in the second game,” added Zakarian. “The guys know they can do it. We seem to have a mental block right now when we get ahead and when we get behind.”
The Vaqueros passed (2.25 average out of 3.0) and served well but couldn’t overcome 33 hitting errors.
“That’s what’s killing us, we’re not earning our points,” said Zakarian. “Give El Camino credit, they were hitting with a lot more confidence.”
The Vaqueros travel to L.A. Pierce on Wednesday night.
