It was déjà vu for the SBCC baseball team on Thursday as it lost at Ventura 2-1 and the Pirates got another complete game from their starting pitcher. The Vaqueros (6-9, 0-2 WSC North) also fell to Ventura 2-1 on Tuesday at home.
Jacob Murray tossed a six-hitter for Ventura (8-8, 2-0). Connor Detko, a freshman right-hander from Royal High, went all eight innings and was the hard-luck loser. He allowed two unearned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts.
Jared Dinges went 2-4 for the Vaqueros, who took a 1-0 lead on Colby Taylor’s RBI single in the fourth. Ventura tied it in the fourth and got the go-ahead run in the fifth on an error.
“Detko pitched a great game,” said coach Jeff Walker. “Ventura has the No. 1 offense in the league (.308 average, 7.6 runs a game) and we held them to one earned run in 17 innings.
“That’s a great job by our pitchers. We just have to get some timely hitting.”
The Vaqueros loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth but Ventura ended it with a strikeout and a double play.
SBCC hosts Hancock on Saturday at 1 p.m.
