CBB: SBCC loss creates 4-way tie for first in WSC

SBCC couldn’t get the timely hits on Tuesday and Oxnard took advantage to post an 11-5 WSC North baseball win at Pershing Park.

The loss snapped a four-game win streak by the Vaqueros (10-10, 4-3), who remained in first place in the wild conference race. SBCC, Oxnard, Hancock and Ventura are all tied for first at 4-3.

The Vaqueros committed five errors, leading to six unearned runs, and left 16 runners on base. Jose Hernandez went 4-6 with three RBIs for Oxnard (10-9, 4-3).

Designated hitter Tyler Sharpe was 3-5 with an RBI for the Vaqueros and Steven Reveles, Zach Zehner and Tony Simon all had two hits. Simon had a two-run single in the sixth.

“With no disrespect to our opponent, I felt like we beat ourselves with too many free bases,” said coach Jeff Walker. “We left a lot of guys on base and couldn’t get that one big hit.”

The Vaqueros left the bases loaded in the second, fourth and eighth innings and didn’t get a single run.

Brendon Shoemake had his roughest outing of the year, giving up eight runs (four earned) on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out four, walked one and hit two batters.

“It was an overall letdown by our team,” Walker added. “In the WSC North, there’s no easy games. Maybe we were looking past Oxnard a little bit and you can’t do that.”

The Vaqueros travel to Oxnard on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
