San Marcos won two of three matches on Saturday and finished in ninth place in the 32-team Redondo Invitational boys volleyball tournament.
The Royals defeated Notre Dame (25-16, 25-22) and Granada Hills (26-24, 25-17) after dropping their first match against eventual tournament champion Dana Hills (25-15, 25-21).
“We’re thrilled with what we saw down there,” said coach Rick Kuntz. “From where we were last year to this year, we’ve really improved.”
Opposite Chris Newton sparked the win over Notre Dame. “He did an outstanding job. He had a run against Notre Dame that helped us beat them,” said Kuntz.
Shane Hauschild and Baker Johnson paced the San Marcos attack with 23 and 22 kills, respectively, on the day.
Kuntz also cited the play of sophomore libero Sean Estabrooks against Dana Hills. “He was solid and right on-point for a young kid.”
The Royals (5-2) return home to play Camarillo on Tuesday.
