Santa Barbara High rebounded from its league-opening loss to Ventura by routing Simi Valley 8-1 in the Chatsworth Tournament on Saturday.
Jeff Paschke and Tyler Newman each had three hits to lead a Santa Barbara offense that was shut out the day before. The Dons erupted for seven runs in the second inning, with Newman and Tristan Bloomer collecting two-run singles.
Newman singled with the bases loaded, driving in Paschke and Michael Day. Peter Ghersen followed with a perfectly executed squeeze bunt to bring home Toby Minehan. With Ghersen on first and Newman on second, Bloomer singled to the gap in right-center field to drive in both runners. Connor McManigal hit into a fielder’s choice and John Brontsema brought him home with a single to center.
Paschke came up again and reached base on an error, allowing Brontsema to score the seventh run.
Joel Johnson (2-0) threw four shutout innings to pick up the win. He struck out five, walked one and allowed only one hit.
Santa Barbara is now 5-2-1.
