The eighth-ranked Westmont women’s team opened the season with a 7-2 win over California Lutheran on Friday afternoon at the Abbott Tennis Courts.
Westmont senior Nicci Yvanovich suffered a 6-1, 6-2 loss to California Lutheran’s Emily Werman at No. 1 singles, but the rest of the singles matches were won by Westmont. At No. 2, freshman Jessica Cedillo claimed a 6-0, 6-1 win over Sarah Baker while at No. 3 freshman Grace Davis defeated Lindsay Murphy 6-2, 6-0.
The battle at number for was a bit closer. The Warriors’ Emily Keach, a sophomore, won the first set over Carly Mouzes 6-2, but then fell 2-6 in the second set. A super-breaker was played to decide the final set with Davis prevailing 10-8.
Both sophomore Carolyn Stevens at No. 5 and freshman Haley Strandness at No. 6 beat their opponents (Jacquleine Ramsay and Lauren Toohey respectively) in straight sets.
California Lutheran again claimed the No. 1 match in doubles with Werman and Baker defeating Cedillo and Davis 8-2. Yvanovich and Keach teamed up at No. 2 to defeated Mouzes and Murphy 8-4. Stevens and Meyer took care of business at No. 3, defeating Toohey and Ramsay 8-2.
The Warriors will be back in action on Saturday as the host La Verne beginning at noon.
